How to Repair Damaged Wallpaper
After wallpapering a room there is usually some paper left over. When you paint a room, and there is paint left over, you normally keep the paint for future touch ups. The same is true for the wallpaper. Keep those extra pieces for future repairs.
Years ago my mother had a family visit, and they brought along their young children. During the course of the visit, one child wrote on her wallpapered wall with a marker. Unfortunately the mark would not wash off. Fortunately, there was a way to repair the section of wallpaper.
Things You'll Need:
- Extra wallpaper
- Straight edge
- Sharp cutter
- Wallpaper adhesive
- Sponge
- Water
-
Step 1
Using your extra wallpaper, cut a rectangular section that is about 4 inches larger than the area that needs to be repaired. Be sure the pattern matches the area that needs to be replaced. We will refer to this piece as the patch.
-
Step 2
Hold the patch over the damaged wallpaper, and carefully align the patterns, exactly.
-
Step 3
Affix the patch to the wall using painter’s tape.
-
Step 4
Use a straight edge for guiding a straight line, and with a sharp cutter cut through both the patch and the damaged section of wallpaper, around the perimeter of the damaged area, within the borders of the patch, in the shape of a rectangle. Be careful to not cut the drywall beneath the wallpaper.
-
Step 5
Carefully remove painter's tape and set the patch aside for a moment.
-
Step 6
Use the cutter to score the damaged piece of wallpaper, then moisten the section with a wet sponge, and carefully remove the cut section. Clean the section, removing any adhesive, and dry.
-
Step 7
On the back of the patch apply a thin coat of wallpaper adhesive.
-
Step 8
Position the patch in the section that you removed from the wall, and align exactly. Use a clean damp cloth to rub over the patch, or use a seam roller. Carefully wipe off any excess adhesive.
