How to Fix A Squeaky Ceiling Fan
Over time, ceiling fans can start to squeak and make all sorts of odd noises. There are a number of different factors that can contribute to squeaking or loud wobbling noises coming from your ceiling
Things You'll Need:
- Dry silicone spray lubricant
- Ceiling fan balance kit
- Phillips screwdriver
- Ladder

Step 1
Figure out what brand of ceiling fan you have. This will be important later if you need to purchase a ceiling fan balance kit. The name of company that produced your fan is normally on the sticker on the top of the fan. You might need a ladder to see it. Some of the more popular ceiling fan manufacturers include: Hunter ceiling
fans , Monte Carlo, Bay, Hugger, and Emerson fans. -
Step 2
Lubricate the track and bearing with a dry silicone lubricant spray. DO NOT use WD-40 as it is not a lubricant. WD-40 becomes extremely dirty and will drip later. WD-40 is for gears only. Turn the fan on to a low setting and spray the lubricant onto the bearings. The motion will help distribute the lubricant evenly throughout the bearings and track.

Step 3
Using your Phillips screwdriver, make sure all of the screws on your ceiling fan are tight and secure. Only tighten loose screws. If the screw is already tight, further tightening will only damage the threads and lead to more problems.

Step 4
If your fan is still making a loud squeaking noise, purchase a ceiling fan balancing kit. You can find them on Shopzilla for pretty cheap as well as a number of other online ceiling fan stores. Some manufactures make specific ceiling fan balancing kits for their models. Universal kits are also available. If you have a loud wobbling noise, it's a good chance your ceiling fan is out of balance. This happens when someone or something comes into contact with the ceiling fan blades. It tends to be more common in outdoor ceiling fans where high winds can cause damage. For installation, search for "How to balance a ceiling fan" on your favorite search engine.
