How to Protect Wood Columns

Protecting wood columns from weather damage is necessary to extend their durability. All wood is vulnerable to the elements. Without its natural outer covering of bark, untreated lumber used for exterior construction will gradually disintegrate under the UV rays of the sun. When it rains, water will be absorbed, causing it to swell. When the rainwater dries, the wood will shrink, resulting in cracking and splitting. By sealing wood columns correctly, these problems can be minimized.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drop Cloths (optional)
  • Ladder
  • Exterior Wood Putty and a Putty Knife
  • Exterior Sealing Caulk (non-silicone, for added durability)
  • Two or Three Paintbrushes
  • Wood Primer
  • Quality Exterior Oil-Based/Latex Paint (at least two coats)
  • Exterior Weatherproofing Wood Sealant
  1. Step 1

Carefully inspect each column from top to bottom. Note any holes, notches or recessed areas in the surface of the wood. Fill these areas with exterior wood putty.

  2. Step 2

Apply an unbroken seam of caulk along the uppermost area of the wooden column, where it attaches to the structure. Do the same to the lowest area at the base, where the column rests.

  3. Step 3

Use one of the paintbrushes to apply primer from the top to the bottom of the wood. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

  4. Step 4

Paint the wood evenly, allowing it to dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat of paint over the first one. Wait for the second coat to dry before adding the sealant.

  5. Step 5

Using a clean, dry paintbrush, apply a weatherproofing, moisture-repelling sealant, making sure all exposed surfaces are covered.
