Adjusting Vent Flashing

There may be times when you will need to adjust your vent flashing on the roof. This could be because of a bad installation or because of snow and ice build up over the winter. The good news is that you can easily adjust your vent flashing without having to replace it.

Remove Some Shingles
You might need to remove some shingles if you can not just pry them up out of the way. Remove them slowly with a pry bar.

Pry up Flashing Nails

Your flashing will be held down two ways. First, there will be roofing nails. These can be pried up with a hammer claw or a pry bar. Second, there will be roofing cement to form a water seal. Use a utility knife to break the seal.

Adjust Vent Flashing
Move the flashing back to its original position and make sure that any bends are smoothed out.

Re-Apply Roofing Cement
When you apply the roofing cement you will need to make sure that it is smooth with not gaps in between the flashing and the roofing material.

Install Shingles

Take the shingles that you pried up and re-install them to the roof. Nail them down with new roofing nails and seal the nail heads with the roofing cement.
