Before you paint a car body, you will need to remove the paint that is on the body if it is peeling or bubbling so that when you prime it and paint it the paint will stick and not peel or bubble along with the old stuff if it was left on the part. Sometimes you don’t need to remove al of the old paint, but if you want a professional paint job that will last, you need to expose the bare metal properly to prepare for priming and painting.

Things You'll Need:

• Electric sander
• 36 grit sand paper
• 80 grit sand paper

  Use the 80 grit sand paper with the electric sander to start the sanding process. Guide the sander across the body part and come back. Keep moving the sander around the painted body part to dull the finish and remove as much of the paint as you can.

• Step 2

  Use a vacuum or a rag to remove the paint dust to see which areas are in need of more sanding with the 80 grit sand paper before switching to the 36 grit.

• Step 3

  Place the 36 grit sand paper on the electric sander and repeat the sanding process. This sand paper will remove any paint left over on the car body. Make sure to get in crevices and along body outlines.
