How to Stay Awake While Driving At Night

You've been there driving when you suddenly feel the Sandman knocking at your car door. Well you don't want to end up in some ditch so your going to need to stay awake.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

At the very first sign of sleepiness try to pull over and drink a cup of coffee. Remember that caffeine takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes to kick in so don't try to jump back in the car and take off again.

  2. Step 2

If you have the opportunity it is always best to find a safe spot to pull over and take a quick nap. Studies have shown that power naps are more effective than the last 20 minutes of your sleep in the morning.

  3. Step 3

If for any reason you are unable to stop remember to keep away from heavy traffic. It is always good to stay about 3 to 4 car lengths away from the car in front of you. This will allow a buffer of error if you do quickly nod off.

  4. Step 4

Chew gum, the active motion of chewing increases oxygen to the lungs. This keeps your brain active and awake.

  5. Step 5

Move your eyes around. Staring straight into road slows down the brain activity.

  6. Step 6

Play mini road games like eye spy and out of state license plate. The idea is to keep the brain active.

  7. Step 7

Sing to your favorite tunes. The heavy breathing and minor movement increase oxygen intake and helps circulate blood. Keeping your self motivated helps stay awake.
