How to Fix a Leaking Car Radiator
Leaking radiators can cause overheating problems as well as other costly problems. Some times if caught early they can be fixed at home with very little money spent. Here's the how to on repairing your leaking radiator.
Things You'll Need:
- Hand tools, depends on vehicle
- coolant dependent on manufacturer recommendations
- other parts or tools dependent on the leak.
-
Step 1
First thing that needs to be done is to assess the leak. This means determining where the leak is coming from and how bad is it. Some radiators especially ones made of plastic are very hard if not impossible to repair. If the leak is from a hole that can not be either brazed or such that the hole is to big to fill or in a awkward place, you may need to have a radiator repair shop look at it or replace it.
Radiator stop leak and other additives are a option. However they are not long term options, they provide short term fixes and should not be relied on as a like new fix. -
Step 2
Some times we really luck out and it's a easy fix like a hose and clamp, cap, or a leaking drain cock o-ring.
If you find that the leak is coming from a easy to repair area like this, gather the parts and tools, drain the radiator if needed, and preform the service. -
Step 3
A lot of times radiators can leak at seams or just have a small hole or crack. If the area affected is metal, you can use a propane or mapp gas torch to melt solder into the hole or crack. The radiator should be drained and clear of any flammable substances. Clean the area well so the solder can bond and not be contaminated.

Step 4
If the leak is from a puncture, in the tubes behind the fins, or in a plastic area, you may not be able to repair it. For plastic areas you may be able to apply a 2 part epoxy or a JB weld type substance to seal the plastic again. If the radiator is not reparable and must be replaced, you can try calling a junk yard for prices too. Some will sell tested good parts with a warranty cheaper than the parts stores. If that is not an option you may need to see you local parts store or even dealership.
