Step 1
The first thing you want to do is turn the gas or electric power off depending on what kind of water heater you have.

Open the tank in order to locate the leak. Open the water supply and try to locate the sound of the water leak. Inside of your heater you will find insulating material. Try to move it only where you hear the sound. You'll then see where that water leak is coming from.

Empty the water heater. There is usually a valve outside of your water heater somewhere.

Cut a little 2 by 2 inch square of the outer most metal casing of the water heater around where the water leak is inside.

Once you located that leak prepare your drill, metal nail, and black electric tape. Roll the black electric tape into five folds (sticky side up) and place it on top of the hole where the water was leaking.

Drill the metal nail on top of the electric tape. There is no need to tighten it excessively. If after you fill the water heater again it is still leaking, then simply keep tightening it slowly until the leak stops.
