How to Remove Auto Window Film

Auto window film is often used by individuals who want a tinted look to their car windows without paying the hefty fee of having the actual glass tinted. Most auto window film is self-installed, and after a few years you may see the window film begin to bubble, allowing air to seep in underneath the film. This look can be extremely undesirable; however, just as easily as you installed the window film, you can remove it yourself, without the aid of a professional.

Things You'll Need:

  • Black Trash Bags
  • Ammonia
  • Spray Bottle
  • Utility Knife
  • Steel Wool
  • Soap
  • Water

Step 1

Fill a spray bottle full of water with a small amount of soap. Shake the mixture and spray the exterior of the car window covered with the film you want to remove.

  • Step 2

Unroll several black garbage bags and stick them onto the window. The soapy water helps allow the bags to stick to the window. Smooth the plastic out so it sits flat on the glass.

  • Step 3

Cover the inside of the car seats with extra plastic bags.

  • Step 4

Spray the actual window film with ammonia. Thoroughly coat the film from the very top to the bottom. Cover the inside of the window with another black trash bag. The ammonia is going to help hold up the trash bag.

  • Step 5

Allow the car to sit out in the sun for an hour or so. The black layers on both sides of the glass will absorb the heat from the sun and loosen the auto window film's adhesive.

  • Step 6

Remove the trash bags from both the interior and the exterior of the car. Peel off a corner of the auto window film if you can find a grip. If you can't, use a utility knife to remove a piece.

  • Step 7

Pull off the auto window film, then remove the adhesive from the interior of the car's window by applying ammonia to superfine steel wool and rubbing it over the interior of the car's window.
