How to Build Built-In Pantry Shelves

Constructing your own built-in pantry shelves is a project that can be easily accomplished by even a home repair novice. Shelves in your pantry can add a nice touch to your kitchen, and help keep you organized. In addition, built-in shelves can add value to your home.
InstructionsThings You'll Need:
Hammer
Electric drill
1 box of screws, at least 1-inch long
Laser level
Measuring tape
Wood: your choice (oak, cedar, pressure treated, etc), approximately 1-inch thick and cut to desired length
16 to 24 L-shaped brackets (able to hold at least 75 pounds of weight)
Pencil
Electric saw
Step 1Decide how many shelves you want in your pantry. You will want to space your shelves at least 18 inches apart, but may want to extend it to 24 inches to give yourself more reaching room for back shelf items and storage for larger pantry items.

Step 2Use a pencil to place small marks on one of the walls to indicate where you want your shelves placed.

Step 3Measure the length from wall to wall at each pencil mark inside your pantry, and mark down each measurement. While the shelves will all be roughly the same size, closets and pantries may have uneven walls (for example, the top part of the pantry or closet may be slightly skinnier than the bottom).

Step 4Measure the wood that will be used for your shelves. Cut them to the desired length needed for each shelf and set them aside.

Step 5Install one bracket at each pencil mark on the wall. Then, measure across to the other wall with your laser level and make another mark with a pencil on the opposite wall. Install another bracket at each pencil mark on the other wall.

Step 6Place a board on each of your shelving brackets and place your level on each shelf to be sure they are even. Then, remove the wood and install the remaining brackets for added support (at least one more on each side, and one to two more on the back part of the wall).

Step 7Replace the boards as your shelves and place your pantry items on the shelves.
