How to Change a Taillight Cover

Breaking a taillight isn't a whole lot of fun. Replacing the lens is not a big deal and takes about five minutes. In this case, the vehicle is a 1986 Toyota pickup, but the process is the same for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement lens

Step 1

Unscrew the taillight lens from the bed of the truck using the Phillips-head screwdriver. There are four screws that go around the perimeter of the lens.

  • Step 2

Separate the lens from the reflective assembly, using your hands to pry them apart. This should be fairly easy to do, as no glue is used to seal the lens. Set the old assembly to the side.

  • Step 3

Place on the new lens assembly in the same orientation as the stock one. Make sure the rubber gasket that goes between the lens and the assembly is intact.

  • Step 4

Screw the lens to the assembly and the truck bed using the factory screws and the Phillips-head screwdriver.
