Can You Undo Window Tinting?

Window tint is aesthetically pleasing and has its benefits, but it also has its disadvantages. It's nice because it limits the amount of harmful UV radiation that penetrates into the vehicle. However, it also limits visibility at night and could be a contributor to an accident. In addition, very dark window tinting (5 percent), is illegal in many states. If you have gotten a ticket and need to remove your tint, or just don't want it on your vehicle, there are ways to remove the tint.

    Window Tint Removal Options

  1. Many techniques are used by professionals to remove window tinting. These techniques include, but are not limited to using razor blades, steamers and even ammonia. Razor blades can scratch your windows and aren't that efficient. Ammonia is obviously hazardous to your health if you breathe it in. You could use a respirator but there are other options that work much better. Ammonia isn't just hazardous to your health, it is also messy. The better option is to use a steamer. This may seem odd or counter intuitive but it really isn't. Think of this as removing ugly wall paper from a bedroom. Steamers are used to remove wall paper by heating the glue that holds the wall paper to the wall. The steamer is used to remove window tint in the same way. The steamer melts the glue that holds the tint to the window.

Using a Steamer to Remove Window Tint

  2. Steamers are definitely the best choice for removing window tint. Get a hold of a steamer from a buddy or purchase one from a hardware store. It will have multiple uses so it's not a bad investment. One word of caution, however. Steamers can be potentially dangerous as they can severely burn the skin. With that said grab an extension cord and head to the vehicle with the steamer in hand. Steam one window at a time for two to three minutes. At this point the tint is ready to be removed. Use a razor blade to start the peeling. The point is not to use a razor blade to remove the tint, but simply to start the removal. When you have started the peeling from a corner, you can simply pull on the tint and it should peel off. If at any time during the removal process you feel that it isn't coming off easy, go ahead and steam the window again, and particular at the area where you are peeling. Now it should be easier to peel. Do this for all the windows.
