Electric Dryer Repair: Dryer Will Not Automatically Stop
Electric dryer repair can be something of a hassle if you are not sure what it is you need to look for and what tools you will need. A broken dryer can prevent you from having clean clothes, a situation which can slow down the entire home. You will of course want to get your dryer fixed as soon as possible. With a few helpful hints, you can do just that.
Materials Needed:
Screwdriver
Towel
Pen or marker
Needle-nose pliers
Continuity or multi-tester test
Step 1 – Remove the Screws
Before you begin to test your start switch or conduct electric dryer repair, you should shut your dryer completely turned off. Do this at the breaker panel or fuse box. This precaution will save you from electric shock.
Once your dryer is completely turned off, you will need to look inside of the control console. Take out the screws either on the bottom front half or on the sides. You might find the screws hidden under pieces of trim. If this case you will have to remove the trim first.
Step 2 – Locate the Start Switch
After you have removed the screws, you should place a towel on top of your dryer. The towel will protect the finish while you continue with your electric dryer repair. Tilt forward your control console onto your towel and take off the rear panel.
Up to three wires will connect to your start switch. With a pen or a marker, you will need to mark the connections as well as the wires to help with reconnection later. A pair of needle-nose pliers may be necessary when you are taking the connectors off.
Step 3 – Check for Corrosion
Once you find the connectors, you will look for corrosion. Clean off any corrosion if possible. If you cannot do this, you should replace these connectors while you carry out your electric dryer repair.
Step 4 – Test for Continuity
You will need to test for continuity with either a multi-tester test or a continuity tester. If your switch has two wires, you will need to touch a probe to each of your terminals. A reading of infinity should come up. Hold down the start switch and look for the number to change to zero.
Three-wire switches need to have one probe to the NC or CT1 terminal and another probe on the CO or R1. The tests should read the same as the two-wire switches. If they do not pass, you should replace the wires as you complete your electric dryer repair.
