Electric Dryer Repair: Troubleshooting a Faulty Start Switch
Electric dryer repair can be a hassle if you do not know what steps to take to get the dryer fixed. If you suspect a faulty start switch, you can try a few quick fixes that may help you complete your electric dryer repair. You need to know what to look for and what to expect if you want to get the job done correctly and easily.
Materials:
Screwdriver
Needle-nose pliers
Ohmmeter
Step 1 – Know What to Look For
If your dryer does not start, this could indicate a problem with your start switch. There are tests that you can run that will help you to understand if it is your start switch or another problem with your dryer.
Step 2 – Access Your Start Switch
Before you can test your start switch, you must locate it. The start switch is underneath the control console panel that is on top of your dryer. In order to access the switch, you will need to first remove the trim as well as the screws from your console panel. There are two or three wires (depending on the model) that you will need to label. Take care when labeling them, as you will have to reattach them later. When you are removing the wires, use a pair of needle-nose pliers and be careful not to pull on the wires themselves.
Step 3 – Test Your Start Switch
Now you will use the ohmmeter to test for continuity. Set the ohmmeter to a resistance scale of R x 1. With a two-wire switch, you will need to touch a test probe to the end of the terminals on the switch. You are looking for the ohmmeter to read infinity. With the terminals and probes still touching, you will need to press and hold the switch itself. When you do this, you will look for the reading to go to zero. If the switch does not pass these tests, you will need to replace it.
Step 4 – Consider Other Issues
If your start switch does pass these tests, you will need to move on to other possibilities. You should check to see if there is any power going into your dryer. Make sure that it is plugged in and that the outlet works. Also look for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse.
If none of the these checks indicate any problems, look for the door switch or the thermal fuse to be out. You can often test them fairly easily, and replacement is generally inexpensive and easy to do. If you have exhausted all other options, you can also contact a professional appliance repair company.
