How to Back Float

Ready to kick back and relax in the water? The front float is the perfect way to do so! Follow these easy steps and you will be floating before you know it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Swimsuit
  • Swimming pool or body of water

Step 1

Your first step towards learning how to back float is to stand in an upright position in the water.

  • Step 2

Lean backward with both of your arms stretched out. Your body should be in a "t-shape" position. Your fingers should be straight and hands open.

  • Step 3

As you allow your body to recline, pretend like you are laying back on an imaginary pillow. If you are a child, practice by resting your head on the shoulder of a trusted adult.

  • Step 4

Lift your legs up off of the bottom of the swimming area and give them a little kick to the surface of the water. Then keep your legs straight and still, without kicking.

  • Step 5

Your ears should be in the water. The waterline should be along your hairline.

  • Step 6

If you feel yourself start to sink, arch your back to keep your bottom from sinking. You can also give your legs a quick kick to the surface if they are sinking.

  • Step 7

When you are finished back floating, bring your feet back to the bottom of the pool and stand up.
