How to Shoot a Basketball Correctly
-
Step 1
-
Square up to the basket... Your feet, shoulders, and entire body need to be squarely facing the basket.
-
Step 2
Balance... Before you shoot, make sure your completely balanced.
This means no leaning back or leaning to the side. Get all your body weight even, towards the basket. -
Step 3
Eye your target... If you're going to miss, make sure you miss either long or short, discipline yourself to never miss left or right.
-
Step 4
Confidence... Know that the ball that you are about to release is going in the basket.
-
Step 5
Use your legs... Bend your knees and use your lower body strength to minimize the amount of force you have to use with your wrist.
-
Step 6
Ball placement... Your strong hand should be slightly underneath the ball, while your off hand is only acting as a guide to stabilize the ball on your strong hand.
-
Step 7
Now you're ready to release the ball... In one fluid motion, simultaneously bend your knees, slightly lift your elbow up, and flick the ball upwards, in order to get nice arc on your shot. Most of your control will be in your wrist and forearm. Minimize the amount you use your arm to shoot.
-
Step 8
Follow through... This is just another way to make sure that you do use your wrist in your shot. If you use your wrist, you should see that the basketball will have a proper rotation. After the shot, your arm should be in a way as if you are reaching for the cookie jar up on a high surface.
-
Step 9
Have a short memory... If you miss the shot, quickly identify what you did wrong, but then immediately forget that shot in order to have %100 concentration on your next shot. This takes a level head and not getting "too up" or "too down" on shots you make or miss.
