How to Keep Sofa Cushions in Place
Sofa cushions that just refuse to stay in place can be quite a pain. While some sofas are built to allow you to zip the cushions to the frame, in many cases you are left to solve the problem yourself. Fortunately several solutions should allow you to keep your sofa cushions from sliding around without giving up and just stapling them to the frame. These solutions are easy, requiring just a few materials and no technical skill.
Things You'll Need:
- Grip liner
- Velcro pads
- Needle and thread
Attach small velcro strips or pads to both the cushion and the sofa frame. You can buy small velcro pads at most hardware
stores, and many come with adhesive backs that make them very easy to attach to your sofa. Unfortunately the adhesive can wear out and may not stick to all materials very well, requiring you to replace the pads every so often or abandon them entirely.
Sew the velcro pads to the cushion and frame. If adhesive is not holding the velcro in place, a little bit of work with a needle and thread can fix the problem. Use a sturdy thread, and hold the velcro pads in place with a few fairly firm stitches. While the thread may wear down over time, this should still be a more permanent solution than the adhesive.
Combine the two methods. Nothing should prevent you from using both adhesive and thread to hold a velcro pad in place. If neither method works well on its own, try both of them together. The sewing may be a little more difficult, but the end result should be more durable.
Hold the Cushion in Place With a Mat
Use a grip mat. Most hardware stores sell these plastic and rubber, non-adhesive mats that can be placed between two things to increase friction and prevent slipping. They come in a variety of sizes, so make sure to buy one close to the size of your cushion so that none of the mat peeks out at the edges.
Adjust the mat so it matches the size you need. You can cut a grip mat down to perfectly match your sofa without too much trouble.
Place the mat between the cushion and the sofa frame. This should keep the cushions from slipping around. Most of these mats are very durable and will probably outlast the sofa.
