How to Replace Auto Starter Contacts

Replacing starter wires becomes necessary when wires become corroded over time and do not carry enough electricity to turn the starter over and start the car. The wire harness is relatively inexpensive and the procedure is the same for almost every make and model vehicle.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 9/16-inch wrench
  • 1/2-inch wrench
  • 1/4-inch wrench
  • Starter wire harness
  • Crescent wrench
  • Voltmeter
  1. Step 1

Using the appropriate size wrench, disconnect both the negative battery cable and the positive cable. These can be identified by looking for the plus and minus sign on top-mounted batteries and by the color red and black on side-mounted batteries. Be careful not to touch both cables together or allow the red wire to touch anything metal as this will produce an electric shock.

  2. Step 2

Once the battery cables are disconnected, locate the starter by using the service manual for the make, model and year of your vehicle.

  3. Step 3

Use the appropriate size wrenches to disconnect the large red wire by removing the nut holding it on.

  4. Step 4

Use the appropriate size wrench to remove the bolt holding the black ground wire to the starter.

  5. Step 5

Remove the wire harness from engine compartment by feeding it around other engine parts and pulling it free from the engine compartment.

  6. Step 6

Attach the new wire harness using the appropriate size wrenches. One end to the black and red or positive and negative posts of the battery, and the other end to the positive and negative nut and bolt on the starter. Attach the starter wires first, then the battery wires. Take care not to cross the wires as this will cause a short and ruin your new wires. Make sure both the wires are securely fixed to their positions. Test by starting the car.

  7. Step 7

If the car fails to start, check the wires to make sure they are tight and in the right position. If they are secure and in the right place, use a voltmeter to check the battery voltage and recharge or replace if not properly charged.
