Painting Cement Siding

Painting cement siding is challenging because cement is extemely porous and can absorb a great amount of paint. If the surface is not properly prepared before the paint is applied, the results will be unsatisfactory. The proper tools and materials – along with the right know-how, will get you through the project successfully.

Materials Needed:

  • Power washer or water hose
  • Broom
  • Ventilator mask
  • Paint sprayer
  • Sealant
  • Paint
  • Masking tape
  • Cardboard

Step 1 – Working in the Right Weather Conditions

The first step to success calls for choosing a day that is warm but not humid and, since you'll be using a paint sprayer, a day that is not windy.  Paint sprayers and wind don’t mix well at all.

Step 2 – Siding Cleaned and Prepped

Before painting your cement siding you need to give it a thorough cleaning. The best method is to use a power washer. These can be rented at a local tool rental center or possibly your favorite home improvement store. Otherwise, you can use a standard household water hose with a spray nozzle attached. Wet the entire surface area and sweep any dirt and debris free using a broom.

Step 3 – Cover the Windows

Cut out cardboard covers for any windows, doors, vents or other areas that will not be painted. Use masking tape to secure the cardboard covers in place.

Step 4 – Spray Sealant

Before you paint, you must seal. Pour sealant into the sprayer. Make sure to obtain a good grade sealant from your local paint store or home improvement center. Get enough to apply at least two coats. The sealant will form a layer upon which the paint will adhere. Without a sealant raw cement would absorb way too much paint. The use of a powered sprayer allows for complete and uniform application across the entire surface area. Always wear a ventilator mask when operating the sprayer so you do not inhale any sealant or paint. Make sure to cover all edges and allow sufficient dry time.

Step 5 – Paint the Siding

Once you’ve successfully applied two coats of sealant and allowed it to dry, clean the sprayer thoroughly before pouring in paint. Apply an initial coat covering the surface area evenly and completely. Let the initial coat of paint dry sufficiently and then apply a second again making sure to cover the entire surface area evenly.

Step 6 – Touch Up

Once the second coat has dried, examine the cement siding for missed areas that need a touch up. You may need to use a brush if there are hard to reach areas, but typically a sprayer does a complete job quite well.

Step 7 – Clean Up

After touching up and letting all painted areas dry, remove the tape and cardboard checking to make sure no stray paint is in an area you do not want it to be. Remove any stray paint marks immediately.

Tips to Remember

Wear appropriate clothing for a spray paint project. Although you have chosen a non-windy day, paint may spray on your clothing so wear  work-type attire as well as a hat to protect your head. Always wear safety goggles when working with a paint sprayer.
