How to Build Wooden Cabinets
Building wooden cabinets is a project that can be completed over the weekend. Although pre-assembled cabinets are now available that can be quickly installed, building your own cabinets is a project that most DIY-ers find enjoyable and a source of pride for many years to come. The primary goal of cabinetmaking is to ensure durable storage for tools, materials, and important items. Therefore, it is advisable to ignore instructions which encourage the use of plywood and wood composites. For best results, you should use sturdy hardwoods such as oak or pine. Maple, although slightly softer, can also work very well for making cabinets.
Things You'll Need:
- Mask and safety goggles
- Hardwood boards (no more than 1/2 inches thick)
- Tape measure
- 30 mm screws and nails
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Fixtures (handles, hinges/magnetic “catches”)
- Wood putty
- Drill
- Saw
- Sand paper
- Lacquer/paint (optional)
-
Step 1
Cut the wood to the desired measurements of the cabinet. Mark the area where the shelves will be placed in pencil and drill holes for screws to a depth of 2mm under the wall’s surface. Insert shelves while maintaining a gap of 2mm from the front. Screw the shelves into the pre-drilled holes and use glue to keep them firm.
-
Step 2
Place the shelf’s top, keeping the gap of 2mm from the back. Insert 30mm screws in the pilot holes. Attach the base of the shelf and repeat the above process, affixing with screws and glue. Join the kickboard to the base using 30mm nails and leaving a gap between the kickboard and edges. Fix the back kickboard between the sides using nails, this time leaving a gap of 10mm from the back.
-
Step 3
Cut a square rear panel and screw it to the back of the cabinet. On the door pieces, drill holes into the marks you have placed earlier for the shelves. Fix the shelves, ensuring a gap of 2mm from the front and back. Screw the shelves into place. Attach the door panels to the shelf’s front using nails.
-
Step 4
Place the cabinet on the floor and cut out an area for the hinges according to the door measurements. Ensure a gap of 2mm between the door and the top and bottom of the cabinet. Screw in the cabinet doors and use magnetic catches to ensure the door will remain in position when closed.
-
Step 5
Fix the handles to the doors of each outer panel. Use wood putty to fill up all the visible screw holes.
-
Step 6
With sandpaper, smooth the surface of the cabinet, making sure the front is sanded well. You can apply lacquer and paint if desired.
