How to Mount Brackets to Shelf Sides

There are many methods and applications for installing shelves, and they are all fairly easy. They come in a range from simple “L”-shaped brackets to multi-shelf shelving units. However, for shelves to reach their maximum potential, it is recommended that adjustable brackets be used. This makes it possible for the space between the shelves to change. Here's how to mount brackets to shelf sides.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shelves
  • Shelf brackets
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Hack saw
  • Hammer
  • Straight edge
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety glasses
  1. Step 1

Measure the distance between the bottom of the shelf side to the top. Mark that measurement on the brackets.

  2. Step 2

Cut the brackets to length with the hack saw.

  3. Step 3

Draw a (vertical) plumb line 1½ inches from the front edge of the shelf side. Do the same from the back edge (or out from the corner if attaching it to the wall).

  4. Step 4

Place the bracket on that plumb line and secure it to the shelf side with the nails that came with the brackets. Take care not to strike the bracket too hard with the hammer.

  5. Step 5

Locate the desired place on the bracket and install the shelf clips that came with the brackets accordingly.
