Toilet Installation and Replacement

Preparing Basement Bathroom Plumbing

Placing a basement bathroom in your home isn’t as hard as it may sound. There are a few things you need to consider since gravity will not be on your side. Here are a few things you can do to prepare the plumbing in your basement for a bathroom.

How to Replace a Toilet

Changing your toilet is an easy project that should take half a day or less. The most common toilet has a separate tank that mounts on top of the bowl. These instructions apply most specifically to this type of toilet. If you have an integral tank/bowl toilet, a flush valve or a wall-mounted toilet, your procedure will vary somewhat.

Whatever kind of toilet you use as a replacement, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Fig. 1 shows the parts of a typical toilet.

How To Replace A Bidet

Installing a bidet in a home has become a very popular bathroom fixture addition. However, occasionally a bidet needs to be removed and replaced with a toilet or another bidet.

Bidets have gained in popularity as an alternative to the traditional toilet because they offer a more sanitary option to toilet paper. Bidets feature one or two spigots and a faucet and can also be used for foot washing. In the United States, the most common form is the bowl bidet, but they can also be found with handheld spray handles that are battery powered.

How to Remove and Replace a Toilet

Step 1. Turn the water off at the supply lines. Flush the toilet several times to remove water from the bowl and tank. Use a sponge to remove any remaining water from the tank and the bowl.

Step 2. Remove the wing nuts that attach the tank to the bowl. If they are corroded, use penetrating oil to help loosen them.

Step 3. Disconnect the water supply lines. Now the tank is ready to remove from the bowl.
